Follow My Voice – With The Music Of Hedwig
The LGBT Youth Galway group had it’s first official outing to see the film Follow My Voice – With The Music Of Hedwig as part of the Out On Film strand of the Galway Film Fleadh. Some representative of the Dublin based Belong To group came down for the occasion, and we all gathered together for some sandwiches and some ice-breaker games (pitting Galway against Dublin will always bring out the competitive streak it seems).
The movie was particularly interesting for the two youth groups in that it followed a music producer who was putting together an album of covers of the songs from Hedwig And The Angry Inch as a way of raising money for the Hetrick-Martin Institute – home of the Harvey Milk High School in New York. The film also follow four of the teenagers attending the school, and what their lives were like and how they ended up in that school. Each of the four teenagers came from different backgrounds had all had very different experiences growing up as a gay teenager.
